Questions

The things people ask before they book, answered properly.

Booking and price

How much does a skip cost?

The price you see is the price you pay. It covers delivery, fourteen days' hire, collection and tipping. There are no extras added at the end.

When am I charged?

Your card is authorised when you book but not charged. We take the payment only when a local operator accepts your job — usually within a couple of hours during the working day. Book in the evening and operators pick it up from 7am the next working morning. If nobody can cover your date, the authorisation is released and you pay nothing.

How long do I get the skip for?

Fourteen days from delivery as standard. If you need it longer, contact us before your collection date and we'll arrange it with the operator.

What size skip do I need?

As a rough guide, a 6-yard builders skip holds about 65 bin bags — roughly a kitchen refit or one floor of a house. A 2-yard mini is a cupboard clear-out, a 4-yard midi is a bathroom or a garden clearance, and an 8-yard maxi handles a full house clearance. If you're between two sizes, take the larger one — it costs less than a second skip.

Can I change or cancel my booking?

Yes. Contact us and we'll sort it. If the operator has already loaded the skip for delivery there may be a charge, which we'll always tell you about before it's applied.

Delivery and placement

Where can the skip go?

On your own driveway or land, no permit needed. On a public road, you need a council permit — we arrange it and the cost is already in your price.

Do I need to be there?

No, as long as the spot is clear and the driver can get to it. Leave any instructions when you book and we'll pass them to the operator.

How much room does the skip need?

Think of the footprint of a car, on firm level ground, with clear access for a lorry. Watch for low branches, overhead cables, narrow gates and parked cars — those are the usual reasons a delivery fails.

What time will it arrive?

Operators run routes, so delivery is any time between 7am and 6pm on your chosen day. We'll email you when the job is accepted and when it's out for delivery.

What you can put in it

What can't go in a skip?

Plasterboard (it has to be kept separate), fridges and freezers, TVs and monitors, tyres, paint, oils and chemicals, asbestos, gas bottles, batteries, and anything still plugged in. Mattresses carry an extra charge in some areas. If you're not sure about something, ask us before the skip arrives — it's much easier than after.

Can I fill it above the top?

No. The load has to sit level with the rim. An overloaded skip can't legally be carried on the road and the driver will refuse to take it, which means a wasted trip for everyone.

What happens to my waste?

It goes to a licensed transfer station, where it's sorted and the majority is recycled or recovered rather than landfilled.

Licensing and paperwork

Do I get a Waste Transfer Note?

Yes, automatically and digitally, and we keep a copy for two years. This is your legal record of where your waste went, and it's worth having.

Are your operators licensed?

Every one. We check each operator against the Environment Agency's public register of registered waste carriers before they receive any work, and again when their registration renews. Skipwise is itself a registered waste broker, number CBDU649374.
